After two years, this group of citizen will never again be in the same room. We tried to lead Maine to a better future. We succeeded in many ways. We failed to get past the Governor in many ways. All we can do is the best we can.
Maine State Capitol in Augusta. A repair of our copper dome after over 100 years. Soon it will shine like a new penny, only to age and patina like all of us.
We passed the Speaker's bill which allowed the insurance companies to make money on infirmities but also got 70000 Mainers insured. we will see what the Gov says.
THIS IS IT. Healthcare is a right. This our last chance to have 70,000 Mainers covered to be healthy. We have compromised as much as possible. We will accept healthcare on the New Hampshire model. We can do this together.
LD 1252-Improve Maine's economy and Energy Security with Solar and Wind Energy- a rebate for installing renewable energy was passed by the House and Senate, then vetoed by the Governor. Today, we will hopefully override the veto in the House. Please, all Mainers, talk to your State Senators to override the veto and encourage renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions.
Last night in Hallowell, the Maine Public Utilities Commission held a public hearing on a request by Central Maine Power Company to raise rates and to charge an additional 'standby charge' for those connected to the grid and produce their own energy. this would be a huge inhibitor of renewable energy and unprecedented. More than 100 solar supporters attended the hearing and testified. Tonight, the PUC will hold a similar public hearing in Portland. Southern Mainers, please attend at 7 if you can.
Today, we celebrate Arts Education. We are also overriding Governor's vetoes overwhelmingly. He vetoed a bill allowing elected officials to visit medical marijuana growers. He also vetoed a bill closing loopholes in child abuse laws. And then, of course, highway signs. Many signs have all kinds of extraneous info that don't comply with federal standards. I guess we have to bow to the feds on this since they pay so much for the roads.
LD 1772-Metallic Mining Exploration
Maine's last experience of mining in Brooksville is now a Superfund site. Our water must be protected. Companies must leave a mining site in a stable geochemical state. Thanks Rep. Ralph Chapman.
LD 1252 'An Act To Improve Maine's Economy and Energy Security with Solar Energy' was reconsidered. This bill restores a solar rebate keeping Maine on par with other New England states. The reconsideration added an amendment to include heat pumps getting us many more votes (109 to 30). If all representatives stay with their votes, this bill will be veto-proof.
Today, in the House, we voted to end the rides contract which has been a disaster, the no-bid Alexander Contract, a waste of money.
